About

Working across design and art venues: Gamper’s practice engages in a variety of projects from exhibition design, interior design, specialist of one-off commission and the design of mass-produced products for the cutting edge of the international furniture industry. Martino has an abiding interest in the social aspects of furniture design. In particular, he has a love of corners and the multiple emotions provoked by the single right-angled boundary. Alongside this concern with underused spaces, Gamper also nurtures an interest in unwanted objects. Reworking furniture that has been dumped on the streets, he has created a mismatched family of objects. Some are beautiful and some pathetic, but all of it, even the most abject of pieces a euphoria inspired by the escape of destiny. For thr first outing of his exhibition “100 Chairs in 100 Days,” held in October 2007, Gamper arranged a collection of seats over two floors of large mid-Victorian house in London’s South Kensington.

He has worked in the public realm, with designs for: Design Museum, London, Victoria & Albert Museum, London, Wellcome Trust, London, Triennale Design Museum Milano, Yerba Buena Centre, San Francisco, Frieze Art Fair, London, Royal College of Art, London,

He collaborates with a number of British and European designers and has been a teacher and workshop leader at the Royal College of Art, London, Ecal, Lausanne and the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs, Paris.

His latest commission are the design of public street furniture for the Park-to-Park connection from Victoria Park to the Olympic Park, London in collaboration with LTGDC. A Welcome Desk for the Centre d’Art Contemporain, Genève. A chair called Vigna for Magis, Italy.

He has been awarded Moroso Award for Contemporary Art, 2011, Wallpaper* Award for Best Use of Colour, 2011, Wallpaper* Award for Best Alchemist, 2008, Brit Insurance Designs of the Year, Winner of Furniture Award Category for ‘100 Chairs in 100 Days’, 2008
